Armed Forces Day saw 480 participants join together to yomp over 36million steps across 18,000 miles to complete the Alliance Trust Cateran Yomp. Smashing the fundraising target and raising over £250,000 for ABF The Soldiers’ Charity and the Prince’s Trust Youth Business Scotland, the Yomp challenged walkers of all abilities to go for bronze (22 miles), silver (36.5 miles) or gold (52 miles) in a survival of the fittest set against a stunning Perthshire backdrop. Yomping home in first place, shaving three hours off the 2011 record, a team from Alliance Trust, ‘The Good, the Mad and the Elderly’ completed gold in 11 hours 34 minutes, passing through Blairgowrie, Kirkmichael, Spittal of Glenshee and Kirkton of Glenisla.
Next year’s Alliance Trust Cateran Yomp will take place on 15 – 16 June 2013
Stripe is delighted to be working with ABF The Soldiers’ Charity again to raise the profile of the 2012 Alliance Trust Cateran Yomp, following the inaugural event earlier this year. Stripe launched the second annual ‘yomp’ with the help of national treasure and Honorary Colonel of the Black Watch Cadets, Lorraine Kelly.
In her hometown of Dundee, Lorraine joined five soldiers from the Tayforth UOTC in exercising ahead of the 52 mile yomp, which takes place in Perthshire from 30th June – 1st July 2012. The Alliance Trust Cateran Yomp raises money for The Soldiers’ Charity which makes financial grants to support serving and former soldiers and their families in their time of need.
The Prince’s Scottish Youth Business Trust – which awards loans and grants to small businesses across Scotland – will receive a third of the proceeds as the chosen charity of the title sponsor Alliance Trust.

Ultimo entrepreneur and ambassador of Prince’s Scottish Youth Business Trust, Michelle Mone joined soldiers from the Royal Regiment of Scotland to show their support for Scotland’s new big annual walk – the Alliance Trust Cateran Yomp.
The event invites walkers of all abilities to Yomp across Perthshire in an epic 54-mile trek on 25th-26th June. Money from the event will go to ABF The Soldiers Charity (formerly the Army Benevolent Fund), which raises money for serving and former soldiers and their families and the Prince’s Scottish Youth Business Trust which awards loans and grants to small businesses across Scotland.
Michelle Mone OBE, PSYBT Ambassador said: “The Alliance Trust Cateran Yomp is a fantastic event, giving everyone the opportunity to undertake such an adventurous challenge, and raise money for two very different, and very worthwhile charities.”
David Fox-Pitt, Director of Wildfox Events said: “We’re thrilled to have Michelle on board to back the Yomp. As an ambassador for PSYBT, she has shown how taking part in the event can benefit a huge number of people across Scotland – and we hope even more people will sign up and get yomping!”
Today (Thursday 10 February 2011) sees the launch of the Alliance Trust Cateran Yomp – Scotland’s new big annual walk – taking teams on an epic 24 hour adventure through 54 miles of stunning Perthshire scenery to raise money for serving and former soldiers and their families.
Taking place Saturday 25 June to Sunday 26 June 2011, the Yomp is a walking challenge with a difference. Walkers, their families and supporters will be part of a walking festival and will be treated to live bands, fireworks and a magic lit forest trail along the route. Unlike other walking challenges, the Alliance Trust Cateran Yomp offers something for everyone with a bronze, silver or gold challenge open to walkers of any ability and a ‘Mini Yomp’ to encourage families with little ones to share in the fun.
Supporting the event is adventurer, TV presenter and Chief Scout of the Scout Association Bear Grylls who holds the Guinness World Record for being the youngest Briton to climb Mount Everest. He says of the event: “It’s an epic challenge for an epic cause! This one is going to take guts, endurance and heart. Three great things to live by! Go for it Guys!”
Starting at Blairgowrie the Yomp will lead teams of 3-6 through Kirkmichael, Spittal of Glenshee and Kirton of Glenisla with checkpoints and support teams on hand along the way.
The event is part of a three year partnership between The Alliance Trust and The Soldiers’ Charity, with two thirds of the event’s proceeds going to The Soldiers’ Charity who provide lifetime support for serving soldiers and veterans. The remaining one third will go to the Prince’s Scottish Youth Business Trust – a youth charity which supports self-employment and business creation among young people – selected by event sponsors the Alliance Trust.
